Activation of European environmental procedures of EIA and SEA in Ukraine

Description of the project

The environmental component of the Association Agreement requires that Ukraine take essential steps toward an improved environment. Therefore, the implementation in Ukraine of the European tools Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) has become priority steps in European integration. These steps are Ukraine’s commitments under a number of international treaties and the Association Agreement. As of now, there are visible results but, regretfully, stakeholders’ understanding of how they can eliminate difficulties, which certainly arise in the implementation of such a systemic reform, is rather low.

There is a demand on the part of local governments, the consolidated territorial communities in particular, who too know little about the EIA procedure. This project primarily intended to carry out informational and training activities aimed at building the public capacity to influence on the effective implementation of the European EIA procedure.

The project will assist in the improvement of the international image of Ukraine as a country with effective European business conduct principles that take into account environmental standards.

In the long run, the raised public awareness combined with the possibility of participating in the EIA and SEA procedures will enhance the public capacity to impact the implementation by Ukraine of its commitments.
